ACES (Actualizing Characters by Expanding Self-awareness) is a trauma-informed approach to acting and character development. It's designed to support deep dives into the emotional lives of characters while keeping the actors' well being a priority.

ACES was developed by Alan Powell as a response to international research conducted on the impact of portraying emotionally distressed characters on the actors' mental health. .

Alan's work with actors has led to speaking invitations internationally at conferences such as the International Association of Group Psychotherapy and Group Processes, Musicians’ and Performing Artists’ Health and Performance and the, Australian Society for Performing Arts Health.

ACES cornerstones are;  Resilience, Boundaries, Defense Management and Self-reflection.

Resilience

ACES  engages the actors' personal strengths grounding them in the present before they begin exploring the emotional distress of a character.

Boundaries

ACES assists the actor in keeping the character distinctly separate from their own lives. While at the same time, safely and ethically, explores alignments with the actor.

Defense Management

Whether you're blocked or overwhelmed ACES manages the actors' needs and facilitates a connection that is aligned with the emotional life of the character.

Self Reflection

ACES  encourages the actor to reflect on their own lives and reasons for playing the role as part of the process of character development. It's not therapy but it is therapeutic.
